Blocked Downspouts: Signs, Fixes and Where the Water Should Go

Quick answer

A blocked downspout makes even a clean eavestrough overflow, because the water has nowhere to go. Watch for overflow near one corner, a downspout that stays quiet in steady rain, or water pooling by the foundation. The City of Mississauga recommends cleaning eavestroughs and downspouts at least every spring and autumn, and extending downspouts so water lands at least 3 ft from the foundation.

Why a clean gutter can still overflow

Gutter cleaning usually focuses on the trough, but most blockages form where the water leaves it. Leaves and roof grit wash toward the outlet, catch on the opening or the first elbow, and build into a plug. Once that happens, rain backs up and spills over the edge.

Downspouts are also easy to overlook because you cannot see inside them. A trough can be completely clear while the downspout below it is packed tight.

Signs your downspout is blocked

  • water spilling over the gutter edge near one corner or outlet while the rest of the run drains
  • little or no water coming out of the bottom of the downspout during steady rain
  • water still sitting in the trough near the outlet a day or two after rain
  • seeds or plants growing out of the outlet or the bottom elbow
  • split or bulging downspout sections after a freeze, which can mean water was trapped inside
  • pooling, soil erosion or green moss at the base of the foundation

The City of Mississauga’s Rain-Ready Home Guide lists several of these as red flags for poor exterior drainage, including water overtopping eavestroughs, downspouts draining right next to the foundation, moss growing at ground level on the foundation and ponding that lingers for more than a day.

What you can check from the ground

  1. Take off the downspout extension or bottom elbow. They are often held with a single screw or simply pushed together.
  2. Look up the downspout with a flashlight and clear anything you can reach.
  3. Run a garden hose up from the bottom, or use a plumbing snake, to loosen a clog in the lower section.
  4. Refit the elbow and extension, and check that the joints are tight and pointing away from the house.

If the blockage is at the top, at the outlet or in an upper elbow, it has to be cleared from the gutter. That means ladder work, so weigh up the risks in our guide to cleaning gutters without a ladder.

Where downspout water should go in Mississauga

Clearing the blockage is half the job. The other half is making sure the water ends up somewhere safe. The City’s Rain-Ready Home Guide reminds homeowners that the City handles stormwater on the streets, but each owner is responsible for what happens on their lot. Its guidance includes:

  • Extend downspouts so the water lands at least 3 ft from the foundation, and further if possible.
  • Aim the outlet onto lawn or garden, not toward a neighbour’s yard.
  • Use splash pads or large stones where the water lands to limit erosion.
  • Avoid discharging across sidewalks or driveways, where water can freeze and become a slip hazard.
  • Keep the ground sloping away from the house, ideally dropping about 2–3% over the first 2 metres (6 ft).

The guide also notes that the City’s property standards bylaw requires owners to prevent drainage impacts on neighbouring land when they change drainage on their property, so check where the water will travel before you move a downspout.

Downspouts that run into the ground

Many older homes have downspouts connected to underground pipes, and in some cases to the sanitary sewer. The City warns that during heavy storms this can overload sewers and lead to sewage backing up into basements.

The Rain-Ready Home Guide strongly recommends disconnecting these downspouts and redirecting the water to a safe surface outlet. A basic disconnection can often be done yourself, while more complex situations may need a professional. The guide also mentions possible rebates for some flood-prevention work, so check mississauga.ca for current eligibility before you start.

Downspouts in winter

A downspout outlet buried in snow or sealed with ice cannot drain meltwater during a thaw. The City suggests keeping outlets clear in winter, either by clearing them or by using a heat cable to keep them open.

Clearing leaves out of the eavestroughs and downspouts in late fall gives the system the best chance of draining through freeze-thaw cycles. Our guide to ice dams and eavestroughs covers the rest of the winter picture.

When it is more than a clog

If a downspout is clear and the gutter still overflows, the cause may be slope, a damaged section, an undersized outlet or simply too much roof area draining to one downspout. Our Clarkson, Lorne Park and Mineola guide covers these causes in more detail.

FAQs

How do I know if my downspout is clogged?

Watch it during steady rain. If little or no water comes out of the bottom while the gutter above overflows near that outlet, the downspout or its elbow is likely blocked.

How far should a downspout drain from the house?

The City of Mississauga recommends extending downspouts so water lands at least 3 ft from the foundation, and further if possible, onto lawn or garden rather than a neighbour’s yard.

Can my downspout drain onto the driveway?

It is best avoided. The City’s guidance warns that water discharged across sidewalks or driveways can freeze and become a slip hazard.

Should my downspout be connected to an underground pipe?

The City strongly recommends disconnecting downspouts that run into underground pipes, because during heavy storms they can overload sewers and contribute to basement flooding.
